How to Stop Flooding and Waterlogging in Your Compound: Drainage Solutions for Ghana Homes

When the rains come in Ghana, too many compounds turn into ponds. Waterlogged yards, flooded rooms, undermined foundations and mosquito-breeding puddles are not just an inconvenience — over time they damage your property and your health. The cause is almost always poor drainage, and it can be engineered out. Here is how to stop flooding and waterlogging in your compound.

Why compounds flood in the first place

  • Poor grading (levels): the ground slopes toward the building instead of away from it, so water collects at your walls and foundation.
  • No drainage channels: nowhere for storm water to go, so it pools and soaks in where it lands.
  • Clay or compacted soil: water cannot infiltrate, so it sits on the surface.
  • Over-paving: when the whole compound is concreted with no outlet, every drop of rain has to run somewhere — usually into the house.
  • Building in a low-lying area or on a waterway without the drainage such a site demands.
  • Blocked or undersized existing drains that cannot carry a heavy downpour.

The drainage solutions that actually work

1. Get the levels right (grading)

The foundation of all drainage is correct site grading: the ground should fall away from your building on all sides so water is led off, not toward, your structure. This alone solves many waterlogging problems.

2. Install perimeter and channel drains

Purpose-built channels around the compound and along paved areas collect run-off and carry it to a safe discharge point instead of letting it pond.

3. Add soakaways and French drains

Where there is no public storm drain to connect to, soakaways and gravel-filled French drains give water a controlled place to infiltrate the ground, keeping the surface dry.

4. Use permeable surfaces

Permeable paving and planted areas let rain soak in naturally, reducing the volume that has to be drained away.

5. Separate storm water from waste water

Rainwater should never be dumped into your septic or sewage system — it overwhelms it. A proper design keeps the two separate.

For wastewater drainage: the SBDS advantage

Surface flooding is one problem; wastewater drainage on plots with no public sewer is another — and they often go together. The Sisal Biomechanical Drainage System (SBDS) is engineered specifically for Ghanaian conditions — high water tables, clay soils and unsewered plots — to move and treat wastewater reliably where ordinary systems fail. Paired with good storm-water drainage, it keeps your compound dry and healthy year-round.

Do not wait for the next downpour

Drainage problems only get worse — and more expensive — the longer they are left. A proper drainage design, done once, protects your foundation, your health and your investment. Sisal Engineering & Construction designs and builds drainage solutions for homes and institutions across Ghana.
