Few household problems are as frustrating — or as expensive — as a septic tank that fills up or overflows too quickly. If you are calling the desludging truck every few months, something is wrong. The good news: it is almost always fixable once you understand the cause. Here is why septic tanks fill up fast in Ghana, and the lasting solutions that stop the cycle for good.
Signs your septic system is struggling
- Frequent desludging — more than once a year for a normal household.
- Slow-draining toilets, sinks and showers.
- Foul smells around the tank or soakaway.
- Wet, soggy ground or unusually green grass over the soakaway area.
- Sewage backing up into the lowest toilet in the house.
Why septic tanks fill up too fast — the real causes
1. The soakaway has failed or was never built properly
A septic tank is only half of the system. The liquid (effluent) is meant to drain out into a soakaway and disperse into the ground. If the soakaway is undersized, clogged, or sitting in clay or a high water table, the liquid has nowhere to go — so the tank fills up. This is the number-one cause in Ghana.
2. The tank is undersized for the household
A tank built for a small family cannot cope once the household grows or a second bathroom is added. Too little capacity means too little time for solids to settle and break down.
3. Groundwater is getting in
In areas with a high water table or during the rainy season, groundwater seeps into a cracked or poorly built tank, filling it with water that is not even coming from your home.
4. Rainwater is connected to the system
Roof gutters or yard drains wrongly connected into the septic system flood it every time it rains.
5. Non-biodegradables and harsh chemicals
Wipes, sanitary products and excessive bleach kill the bacteria that break down waste and clog the tank with material that never decomposes.
6. The tank is simply never desludged
Even a perfect system needs occasional desludging. Neglect it for years and solids build up until there is no working volume left.
The lasting solutions
Fix or rebuild the soakaway
Often the tank is fine and the soakaway is the problem. A correctly sized soakaway — matched to your soil drainage and water table — can transform performance.
Right-size and seal the tank
If your tank is too small or leaking, rebuilding it to the correct capacity with watertight construction stops both overflow and groundwater infiltration.
Upgrade to a modern, low-maintenance system
The most permanent fix is to move away from a basic septic pit altogether:
- The Mechanized Biofil Toilet System — an aerobic, on-site treatment system that digests waste with almost no sludge build-up, so you virtually eliminate frequent emptying.
- The Sisal Biomechanical Drainage System (SBDS) — an engineered drainage-and-treatment solution designed for Ghanaian conditions, including high water tables and plots with no public sewer.
- The Mechanized Septic Tank System — a re-engineered septic system that treats waste far more efficiently than a traditional pit.
Not sure which fix you need?
The right solution depends on your soil, water table, household size and budget — which is why a proper site assessment matters. Sisal Engineering & Construction diagnoses failing systems across Greater Accra, Eastern and Central regions and installs sanitation that actually lasts.
